Jamie Lidell – Your Sweet Boom

jamie-lidell-compass

a couple of months ago the title track for Lidell’s new record Compass was released on his website and i was somewhat wary of what the record held in store; in what new directions he had gone. fears have been since set aside with a full listen to the whole album. in context, i am now okay with Compass, but am so much more than loving the rest of this record. full range here, heavy to smooth, dramatic to easy, all so vocally rich, as one might expect from this, one of the modern greats of music, if not undersold king of soul.

Ellen Allien – Dream

ellen allien - dust

Ellen Allien has been my techno crush for about as long as i can remember, and her new record Dust, officially released this week, is possibly even more must-have than her earlier releases, due to a significant musical growth. this is really interesting stuff and totally true to form.

Ratatat – Grape Juice City

ratatat-lp4

of course when i heard Seventeen Years i freaked out, and there was a lot to enjoy about Ratatat in 2004, but as time went by i found that i didn’t have much interested in listening to backwards guitars anymore, and i stopped paying attention to them entirely.

then last week their forthcoming LP4 leaked and i am so pleased that i picked it up along the way, and not just because there is a point on the record that i laugh out loud every single time. the backwards guitars are still screaming, but they are tempered with lush string sections and varied arrangements and fuller beats, and generally a bit more form-play i think. totally fresh and wild.

Wisp – To Draw Something Beautiful

wisp-we-miss-you

just one thing to love about Niagara Falls NY’s Wisp: he is signed to Rephlex Records and he sounds like it. this is the drum n bass side of IDM, and Wisp has a massive vocabulary in that particular dialect. eloquent, well crafted, awesome.
